Bee Field

Our Bee field is located on our property in a void amongst the trees It's gets lots of sunlight and is easily accessible but would take some work to trip over .. It's also not that close the house or honey house so that the bees there will be kept to a minimum

This is the field as you drive up to it... We have removed 6 40 foot trees and installed a 7000 volt fence to deter our furry bear friend.. See why

There are 19 active hives and 1 nuc in this field today... We have  3 more hives to relocate but there just wasn't enough room in the truck. We figure that the property can support 100 hives in the next 2-3 years. and this field is sized for 60 hives... we have picked 2 other sites for setting up hives and will be building the support building for this site in the next 2 weeks.. (Stand by for pictures)

We need to keep the grass cut on a regular basis.. It sort takes two one with the weed eater and the other to cover the hive entrances so that you don't throw the cuttings into the hives...
We bought 10 nucs and 16 working hives last year ... Through the winter we lost 3 hives to starvation.. And this year after we opened up the hives we lost 3 more to either swarming or predators (we are still not sure as there are signs of both). This year we bought a couple more hives. We didn't make any nucs as we were working on our relocation and had our bear problem... We will make a bunch next year.

What is a nuc you may ask?. A nuc consists of a frame of brood (eggs) and a frame of honey (food) and a 2 frames of bees .. You put these 4 frames and 5 empty frames into a super (the box) and they will make a queen in 5-15 days.. You start these in May and by August you should have a double brood  (2 supers)  hive containing 50-60,000 bees and they should have enough honey stored to make it thru the winter. If not you feed them until October when you winterize the hive.

This is what a hive that is working hard looks like..
Here is a view from the west side of the field you can see the vacant stones where the 3 hives we still have to relocate will go...
Update... We bought a couple more hives and now have 25.. The plan as it stands is add 25 hives next year though nucs and purchases...

We have the equipment to extract and package honey. When we get it setup we will have it for sale.. Let me know if you are interested...

Watch for more pictures as we go...
